Rysstadsylv

Rysstadsylv is a silversmith business in Rysstad, Setesdal, established by Trygve Rysstad in the 1970s. The workshop is associated with handmade bunad silver and filigree, particularly Agder and Telemark traditions. Its own history describes the continuation of a family silversmithing tradition.

Business history and family tradition

The workshop's establishment must be distinguished from earlier craft in the family and village. A long family tradition does not mean that the present business has existed equally long. Nor does it make every older brooch from Rysstad the work of one person or business.

Identifying a silver object

Compare design, dimensions, filigree construction, pendants and fastening with documentation for the relevant variant. Traditional patterns may continue for many years and across several workshops. A brooch cannot therefore be securely dated or attributed from its pattern alone.

Record fineness, letters and symbols separately. This overview does not identify a particular historical responsibility punch. Photograph unclear marks closely and seek documented comparisons rather than guessing at a Rysstad maker. Describe missing pendants, repairs and replacement components too. Such changes can matter when comparing an older example with a catalogue design.

Browse bunad silver and brooches.
