Sugar sifter spoon

What is a sugar sifter spoon?

A sugar sifter spoon has a deep bowl pierced with holes or slots so that sugar can be sprinkled over food. In Norway it is associated, among other uses, with serving porridge. The Norwegian term is strøskje.

Form and function

Examine the complete object when identifying it. A spoon with a pierced bowl was not necessarily made for sugar: compare its form, dimensions and construction with documented examples. Also distinguish a sifter spoon from an enclosed sugar caster.

What should be recorded?

Photograph both sides of the bowl and handle, the perforation pattern, marks and any owner’s initials. Record measurements, weight, distortion, cracks and repairs. An inscription may relate to ownership or a gift but should not automatically be treated as a secure manufacturing date.

State metal or silver fineness only when established. For interpreting such marks, see fineness and fineness marks.
