Brick mould
A brick mould shapes clay during hand production of bricks. It is manufacturing equipment rather than the finished fired brick. Traditional examples may combine wood with metal reinforcement.
How it worked
The Powerhouse Museum describes equipment including a mould frame, stock board and tool for removing excess clay. The shaped brick is released, dried and subsequently fired. A raised section on the stock can produce a depression in the brick. Designs vary, so one museum object cannot represent every brick mould.
Assessment
Record internal and external dimensions, reinforcement, marks, wear and detachable parts. A decorative wooden box is not proven brickmaking equipment merely because it is sold as a brick mould. Evaluate documented use and provenance separately. Mould dimensions do not automatically equal the dimensions of the finished fired brick.
