Tar brush
A tar brush is a brush used to apply tar. The name describes its purpose rather than a particular model, maker or date. It differs in intended use from a cleaning brush, even if an older example has a simple, coarse appearance.
Use and variation
Espegard's wood-tar guidance describes application with a tar brush, and its range demonstrates continued use of the tool. Modern brushes come in different widths and forms. Their specifications cannot automatically describe historic examples.
Older equipment
Document the handle, brush head, attachment and marks. Record provenance and reported use. Dark residue alone proves neither tar nor age, nor a particular maritime or farming origin. Distinguish established identification from oral tradition.
