Type/object

Weaving shuttle

A weaving shuttle carries the weft thread back and forth through the shed between warp threads. Many shuttles are elongated and boat shaped, with an opening for a bobbin or spindle carrying yarn.

Different types

The form is adapted to the loom and material. Some shuttles are simple hand tools, while others have metal fittings, wheels or mechanisms for faster weaving. Small band shuttles and larger loom shuttles should not be treated as one identical type.

Assessment

Look for the bobbin, spindle, opening, wear at the ends and repairs. A carved date or name may record an owner, gift or use rather than manufacture. Preserve documented associations with loom, bobbins and textiles. A missing bobbin does not necessarily affect age, but should be recorded.
