Ceramics
What it is
Ceramics is a versatile material made from fired clay, and it has been used by humans for thousands of years for both practical and artistic purposes. The material can take many forms, from simple household items such as plates and mugs, to more decorative objects such as vases and sculptures. Ceramics can be divided into different categories, including stoneware, porcelain and terracotta, each of which has its own characteristics and uses.
Brief history
The use of ceramics dates back to prehistoric times, where the first known ceramic objects were produced in Asia over 20,000 years ago. In Europe, ceramic production was particularly developed in antiquity, with Greek and Roman craftsmen creating both practical and artistic works. In Norway, ceramic traditions also have long roots, with local production becoming particularly important from the 1600s onwards, as several workshops were established. During the 1800s, a number of artistically inspired ceramicists also emerged, contributing to further elevating the craft.
How to recognise/identify
Identifying ceramics can be done by looking at several factors, including material, glaze, form and decoration. Stoneware is often thicker and heavier than porcelain, which is known for its thinner and more translucent quality. The glaze can vary from glossy to matte, and decorative techniques may include painting, impressing or engraving. It is also useful to be familiar with marks or signatures from well-known manufacturers, which can provide information about origin and age.
Collector's value/interest
Ceramics have significant collector's value, and interest in various types of ceramics has grown in recent years. Vintage and antique pieces from renowned manufacturers or artists, in particular, can now command high prices at auctions and in antique shops. Collectors value rare forms, colours and decorations, and many focus on specific time periods or styles. For beginners, it may be wise to start with simpler pieces and then develop a more specialised collection over time.
