Material

Copper

Copper is a soft, malleable metal that has been used by mankind for thousands of years. It belongs to the group of metals known as transition metals and has the chemical symbol Cu. Copper is known for its characteristic reddish-brown colour and has a number of important properties, including high conductivity for both electricity and heat, as well as resistance to corrosion. This has made copper a popular material in both industry and craftsmanship.

History

Copper has been in use since prehistoric times, and it is believed that the first humans began using copper around 9000 BC in the Middle East. In antiquity, copper was used to make tools, weapons and jewellery. It was also a key component of bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, which revolutionised metalworking. In Norway, copper production has a long tradition, particularly from the 1600s, when copper works began to emerge, such as Kongsberg Sølvverk.

Identification

To recognise copper, look for its characteristic reddish-brown colour and smooth surface. Copper oxidises over time and can develop a green patina, known as copper carbonate, which can be desirable to some collectors. Copper can also be easily shaped, and objects made of copper may feature detailed patterns and designs. It is worth noting that copper is often used in alloys, so it may be wise to check with a magnet to see if other metals are involved.

Collector's value and interest

Copper objects hold considerable collector's value, particularly antique and historical pieces. Everything from copper kettles and candlesticks to decorative objects and jewellery can be sought after by collectors. The quality of the craftsmanship, as well as the object's age and condition, will affect its value. Today, there is growing interest in handcrafted products made of copper, especially within arts and crafts and design, making copper a timeless and attractive material for both collectors and enthusiasts alike.
