Melkekolle (wooden milk-souring vessel)
Melkekolle is an older Norwegian word for a wooden vessel holding milk, particularly for souring it. Det Norske Akademis ordbok distinguishes this vessel from the food also called melkekolle. A historical mention can therefore refer either to the container or its contents.
In an antiques description, explicitly identify the object as a vessel. The word alone establishes no particular dimensions, construction, maker or age. Nor does it justify assigning the same form and use to every regional milk vessel.
Record measurements, material, construction, any handle and accounts of use separately. A surviving object may have served several purposes. Separate information from former owners from direct observations. Dark residue or wear alone cannot establish milk-souring use. This article concerns the container meaning without defining a specific regional type.
