Nils M. Elvik
Nils M. Elvik, also known as Nils Martin Elvik, was a Norwegian goldsmith associated with silver and enamel work in Oslo. The National Museum of Norway holds a brooch attributed to Elvik, dated between 1910 and 1915, in cast and engraved silver.
Person, workshop and successor
The specialist reference Solvstempler.no states that Elvik completed his journeyman examination in 1907, received a craft certificate in 1910 and started Nils M. Elvik Sølv- og Emaljefabrik the following year. It also describes later companies and a successor workshop. The individual, the original firm and Nils M. Elvik Eftf. should therefore not be treated as one unchanged maker.
Assessing objects
Compare form, material, technique and any signature with documented museum objects. A retailer name or an unsupported oral account is insufficient for attribution. Record fineness and responsibility marks exactly, but do not assign a particular punch to Elvik without a verifiable mark reference.
