Court-administered estates in Norway (offentlig skifte)

Offentlig skifte of a deceased estate means that a Norwegian district court administers and distributes the estate. An appointed estate administrator, bostyrer, handles the administration. This explanation concerns Norwegian estates and was checked against the Courts' and Norwegian Mapping Authority's information on 1 November 2026.

This differs from private administration, where the heirs handle the settlement themselves or through an authorised representative. The Mapping Authority explains that an appointed administrator receives documentation of the appointment from the district court. A relative and a court-appointed administrator should therefore not be treated as equivalent roles.

For household contents and collections, clarify the contact person and assignment before arranging a site visit, removal or sale. Establish which objects need assessment, which may be retained by heirs and what a purchase offer includes. An object inventory and a condition report can provide a better basis.

Court administration is not a term for a private clearance service. The Courts describe separate conditions and costs for administering an estate this way. Whether proceedings should begin, and who may request them, should be clarified with the district court or a legal adviser. This article does not assess an individual estate case.

Once the appropriate representative has clarified the practical need, OBA's estate site visits and services may be the next step. For individual objects or collections, see our buying enquiries page.
