Reticule (drawstring handbag)

A reticule is a small bag, typically gathered at the top with a cord or ribbon. Pompadour and the French term réticule are names associated with this family of handbags. When describing a historical example, consider its construction and ownership history: the name alone does not establish its age or origin.

Features and examples

Look at the flexible body, closure and the way cords or ribbons are attached. Materials and decoration vary. For example, the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum holds a silk pompadour dated to the first third of the nineteenth century, with embroidery, lace and a ribbon running through a channel. The Rijksmuseum's reticule dated about 1795 to 1805 is another example, with embroidered silk and four cords. These are dates assigned to individual museum objects, not to every bag of this type.

A beaded bag may have drawstrings or a metal frame and clasp. Record the closure, lining, loose beads, tears and repairs in a condition description. Separate documented facts from assumptions about its maker or user.
