Cutting board
A cutting board is a flat surface used when cutting food with a knife. Historical examples form part of kitchen equipment from farms, households and shops. Wear may provide information about handling, but does not by itself establish age or origin.
Yrjar Heimbygdslag records several cutting boards from Ørland, Norway. Two came from the Ryggen farm, while a substantially larger board is recorded from Uthaug's cooperative store. The collection shows why dimensions and documented setting should be considered for each example rather than inferred from a standard shape.
Describe both faces, edges, handles and any markings. Record dimensions, materials and possible replacement parts. Separate documented provenance from assumptions based on wear. A flat wooden board may have served other purposes. An old cutting board should not automatically be described as suitable for present-day food preparation without a separate condition assessment.
