Skjeppe: historical grain measure and measuring vessel
Skjeppe names a historical grain measure and the vessel holding that measure. Norway's Bokmålsordboka emphasises that its capacity has varied. The word can therefore refer to a unit in an old document or to a physical measuring vessel.
One capacity does not fit every example
Oppdal Bygdemuseum's guide to its grain store explains one skjeppe as one eighth of a barrel measure. This is a documented example in a particular historical context, not a universal capacity for every vessel bearing the name. Interpret measurements in old records in relation to their source and period.
For a surviving vessel, record dimensions, material, inscriptions and known use history. Do not assign a specific unit name to an unmarked container on appearance alone. Damage and repairs can be recorded in a condition report.
