Wool comb

A wool comb prepares wool before spinning. Long, substantial metal tines open and align the fibres. Combing can remove shorter fibres and debris and is particularly relevant when preparing long fibres for worsted yarn.

Combs and carders

Distinguish wool combs from wool carders, which have a dense field of shorter metal teeth on a broader backing. The craft organisation behind Hemslöjdsguiden describes them as different wool-preparation tools. The presence of iron teeth alone does not establish an old object's function.

Designs vary. As a documented modern example, Majacraft makes wool combs with single or double rows of tines. This shows why the number of rows alone is not evidence of age. Current product measurements and material specifications should not be transferred to older tools.

Examining older examples

Inspect the handle, tine length and arrangement, attachments and possible signs of clamping. Photograph the entire object and its details. Record corrosion, bent or missing tines, cracks and repairs in a condition report. Where two combs accompany each other, investigate rather than assume that they originally belonged together.

As a practical example, a tool from a farmhouse attic can be compared with documented wool combs while keeping other possible uses open. A carved date alone cannot establish when the tool was made. Information about previous ownership and use forms part of its ownership history.

Next step: To offer older textile tools for sale, consult OBA's buying and selling information and send photographs, measurements and known background.
