Bitossi Ceramiche
What is Bitossi Ceramiche?
Bitossi Ceramiche is an Italian ceramics manufacturer based in Montelupo Fiorentino, Tuscany. The name identifies a workshop and company rather than a single artist or one collection. Its production includes vases, bowls and decorative figures.
From manufacture to modern design
Guido Bitossi founded Manifattura Maioliche Artistiche Guido Bitossi in 1921. Aldo Londi joined in 1946 and became a central figure as artistic director and designer. Under his direction the company developed a modern approach during the 1950s. Ettore Sottsass began collaborating with the company in 1955. Bitossi consequently represents both a craft tradition and a manufacturer working with several distinct designers.
Rimini Blu and craftsmanship
Londi's Rimini Blu has been produced since 1959. Blue glaze and textured surfaces with impressed or incised geometric motifs are important characteristics. The factory describes hand-thrown pieces decorated by hand before glazing. Methods vary between models and collections.
Identification and dating
A blue colour alone does not establish Bitossi manufacture. Compare shape, decoration, ceramic body, base marks and labels against documented models. An inscription such as “ITALY” states an origin but does not identify the maker by itself. Read numbers individually rather than automatically treating them as dates or designer signatures. Because Rimini Blu remains in production, the collection name does not date an individual vase to the 1950s or 1960s.
Buying and assessment
Ask for photographs of the entire object, rim and underside. Check for chips, cracks, gluing and retouching. Distinguish the manufacturer, a documented designer and an attribution based on appearance. Model, size, documentation and condition should be considered together.
