Jevne Glassworks
Jevne Glassworks: historic window glass from Vingrom
Jevne Glassworks was at Vingrom, formerly in Fåberg. Archive catalogue PA-0580 gives establishment in 1792 and production from 1793. Production ceased in 1835; final closure is dated 1840. Distinguish these events when describing its operating period.
Tafelglass and specialised production
Arkivmagasinet describes Jevne’s speciality as tafelglass for windows, between simpler fensterglass and more expensive crown glass in quality and price. Jevne belongs to an industrial history of Norwegian works with different specialisms, rather than a single shared range of decorative glass.
Jevne is not Jevnaker
The similar names can cause confusion with Hadeland Glassverk at Jevnaker. They are separate works. A family reference to “glass from Jevnaker” does not document manufacture at Jevne.
Our identification advice: preserve the original wording in receipts, labels and family accounts. Distinguish a place name actually read in a document from a later interpretation. A history of window-glass production does not establish that an unrelated vase came from the works.
What can be investigated?
Arkivmagasinet identifies Jevne records at the Maihaugen branch of Opplandsarkivet. Follow a specific identification question with documents relating to the object or building. General resemblance to old glass is insufficient.
For an old window, a practical record can include photographs of the complete window, pane positions and existing damage without removing the glass. Note the source of any maker attribution. For a loose glass object, record the proposed maker, securely known material and visible condition separately in an object inventory. Do not present an unresolved origin as a certain attribution.
